Covolution
is a theory of evolution in which adaptive change is driven by the reciprocal,
multi-scale processing of functional information.
Living systems use internally stored models to reorganize themselves and
to construct the environments, symvironment, that in turn constrain and enable them.
Variation and selection are not denied but are relocated: they operate
within this organism-built informational dynamics rather than as external
givens prior to it. The theory's central, testable commitment is that the rate,
direction, and openness of evolutionary change depend measurably
on a system's information-processing and niche-constructing capacity,
not on external selection gradients alone.
