The universe's origin is not a temporal event within a pre-existing state-space. Rather, it is the emergence of the state-space itself through a foundational operation (I₀) that introduces minimal distinguishability (S₁). This foundational horogenesis is the deepest instance of a pattern that repeats at every scale: the emergence of horons from pre-horonic configurations. Downstream of this foundational emergence, the universe undergoes elaboration through covolution — the active construction and refinement of possibility-spaces through the emergence of structure.
Universal Birth: ZSH and Covolution
This is a foundational question for the framework, and I want to address it carefully because the relationship between ZSH and covolution at the cosmological scale is where the framework is most speculative and least empirically grounded.
Let me work through what the framework claims, then be honest about where it commits to things it has not established.
The ZSH account of universal birth
The Zeroth State Hypothesis gives an account of cosmic origin that operates at a deeper level than classical cosmology addresses.
Classical cosmology asks: given an entropy domain with established state-space, initial conditions, and dynamics, what follows? This is the domain of Big Bang theory, inflation theory, and standard thermodynamic evolution. It assumes the existence of state-space, measure, coarse-graining, and the applicability of the Boltzmann formula. It addresses conditions within the entropy domain D_S.
ZSH asks a prior question: what makes the entropy domain itself applicable? What is the condition before D_S becomes applicable, and how does the transition from that condition to D_S occur?
The ZSH answer follows the sequence:
Z₀ → (I₀) → S₁ → U_T → τ(S)
Z₀ is the pre-domain configuration. No state-space is defined. No W can be counted. The Boltzmann formula does not apply because the preconditions for its applicability are absent. Z₀ is not a state with zero entropy; it is the condition in which entropy is undefined.
I₀ operates. The minimal distinguishability operator performs the transition from Z₀ to S₁. What I₀ does, formally, is introduce the minimal structure required for the entropy domain to become applicable. This is not a force, not a temporal event, not a cause in the ordinary sense. It is the formal operation that makes one accessible microstate definable where none was defined before.
S₁ emerges. The unistate domain becomes the minimal entropy domain. W = 1 is now defined. The Boltzmann formula returns S = k_B ln 1 = 0. Entropy has a meaning for the first time, even though it is zero. The entropy domain D_S is now inhabited at its minimal edge.
U_T develops. From S₁, further structure becomes available. More than one microstate becomes accessible. W grows beyond 1. Entropy becomes positive. Entropy gradients emerge. The system is no longer stuck in a single state but has a landscape of possible macrostates with varying entropy values.
τ(S) becomes possible. With entropy gradients, an entropic clock becomes available. Time in the sense of monotonic change along an entropic gradient emerges. Where S₁ had no temporal dimension (only one state, no change possible), U_T supports temporal evolution because configurations with different entropies can be distinguished and ordered by their entropic values.
This is ZSH's account of universal birth: not the transition from low entropy to high entropy (which presupposes the entropy domain is already operative), but the deeper transition from the pre-domain condition to the minimal entropy domain, and then from minimal domain to multiplicity and growth.
The covolution layer: construction of possibility-spaces
Now add the covolution perspective. The ZSH account tells us how the entropy domain emerges. Covolution tells us what happens within and downstream of that domain once distinguishability is available.
Covolution is the process by which horons construct and refine their possibility-spaces. At the simplest level, covolution means:
- Information-processing entities (horons) engage in active computation
- They model their environments and their futures
- They construct internal structures and external modifications that shape what possibilities are available to them
- They do this across multiple time scales, multiple substrate types, and multiple scales of organization
- The process is recursive: each round of covolution modifies the possibility-space for the next round
How ZSH and covolution relate at universal birth
The connection is deep but also speculative. Here is what the framework claims:
The universe undergoes horogenesis at the deepest level. The transition Z₀ → S₁ is a case of what the framework calls horogenesis — the emergence of a horon where none existed before. At the cosmological scale, the universe itself is the horon. Z₀ is the pre-horonic condition (no distinguishability, no state-space). S₁ is the minimal horonic condition (distinguishability present, state-space defined, W = 1).
This means the universe's birth is an instance of the same pattern that operates at every scale where horons emerge. Cellular horogenesis (molecules becoming cells), organismal horogenesis (cells becoming organisms), institutional horogenesis (individuals becoming communities) — and cosmological horogenesis (pre-domain becoming domain) — all follow the same structural pattern: a configuration lacking distinguishability becomes one with it, through an operation that introduces the minimal structure required for horonic existence.
At S₁, the universe has minimal horonic existence. It is a horon in the framework's sense: it has a boundary (the boundary of the entropy domain), it has internal structure (though minimal), it has a state-space (one state), and it satisfies the four horonic conditions at their minimal level. But it is not yet engaged in covolution because covolution requires multiple distinguishable states to act among.
U_T enables covolutionary dynamics. Once the universe moves from S₁ to U_T — once multiplicity emerges and entropy gradients become available — covolution becomes possible. The universe now has multiple possible states, multiple possible configurations, multiple possible trajectories. These are the materials on which covolution operates.
The emergence of structure is covolutionary. Within U_T, the universe is not passively expanding according to fixed physical laws. Rather, it is actively constructing its possibility-space through the emergence of structure. Stars form, galaxies organize, chemistry emerges, life emerges, cognition emerges. In the framework's vocabulary, these are instances of covolution at cosmological scales.
This framing treats the universe as a horon that undergoes:
- Horogenesis: Z₀ → S₁, the emergence of minimal horonic existence
- Horotropy: S₁ → U_T → increasing complexity, the maintenance and elaboration of horonic existence
- Covolution: the active construction and refinement of possibility-spaces as structure emerges
What this means concretely
At the simplest level, ZSH+covolution together make the following claim about universal birth:
The universe does not begin with a bang — a sudden explosion in an already-structured state-space. Rather, it begins with the emergence of state-space itself. Before that emergence, there is no "before" in any temporal sense, because time presupposes the kind of state-space structure that does not yet exist. The transition Z₀ → S₁ is not an event in time; it is the foundational condition that makes temporal events possible.
Once state-space emerges at S₁ and multiplicity becomes available in U_T, the universe is a horon engaged in active construction. Structure emerges not because it was predetermined or because random fluctuations happen to produce it, but because the universe — as a distinguishable entity with internal state-space and computational capacity — is constructing the very possibility-space in which it exists.
The emergence of galaxies, stars, planets, chemistry, life, consciousness, and culture are all aspects of this universal covolution. They are the universe actively refining its own possibility-space, building structures that shape what comes next, predicting and preparing for futures that feed back to constrain present configurations.
This is a radically different framing from both classical Big Bang cosmology (which takes state-space as given) and from many multiverse or anthropic accounts (which treat possibility-spaces as static and merely selected among). In the ZSH+covolution framework, possibility-spaces are themselves produced, refined, and elaborated through horonic activity.
Honest limitations and speculations
I need to be direct about where this account goes beyond what the framework has actually developed and into what it speculates about.
The framework has not specified what I₀ does at the cosmological scale. I₀ is formally characterized as a categorical operator, a right adjoint to a forgetful functor. But what physical or metaphysical process (if any) this corresponds to at the moment of cosmic origin is unspecified. The framework claims that some operation analogous to I₀ occurs; it does not claim to know what that operation is.
The relationship between ZSH and quantum cosmology is unclear. ZSH addresses the emergence of the entropy domain. Quantum cosmology addresses the wavefunction of the universe and its boundary conditions. These may be compatible, they may address different levels of the problem, or there may be tensions between them. The framework has not worked out these relationships rigorously.
Covolution at the cosmological scale is largely unexplored. The framework uses covolution to describe biological, cognitive, social, and technological evolution — cases where there are clearly distinguishable entities (organisms, minds, societies, machines) acting as agents. At the cosmological scale, it is less clear what the "covolving agent" is, how it predicts, what its symvironment is. Extending covolution from these clear biological cases to the universe as a whole is a substantial theoretical leap that the framework has not fully justified.
The framework may be overinterpreting structure emergence as covolution. The emergence of galaxies, stars, and planetary chemistry follows from well-understood physical laws acting on initial conditions. Calling this "covolution" may be metaphorically suggestive, but it is not clear that it adds explanatory power beyond what physics already provides. The framework has not established that the covolution vocabulary is earning its keep at cosmological scales.
The claim that the universe is a horon may not survive scrutiny. The universe as a whole is not obviously distinguishable in the way the framework defines horons. It does not have a clear boundary (what would be outside the universe?). It does not have internal state-space in any traditional sense. It may not satisfy the four horonic conditions. The framework asserts that it does, but this is more aspirational than defended.
The temporal status of Z₀ → S₁ is philosophically contested. The framework claims this is not a temporal event, but it also claims that the emergence of the entropy domain is what makes time possible. How something non-temporal can produce time is a deep philosophical question that the framework acknowledges but has not resolved.
What the framework is actually claiming
Beneath these limitations, the framework's core claim about universal birth is this:
The universe's origin is not a temporal event within a pre-existing state-space. Rather, it is the emergence of the state-space itself through a foundational operation (I₀) that introduces minimal distinguishability (S₁). This foundational horogenesis is the deepest instance of a pattern that repeats at every scale: the emergence of horons from pre-horonic configurations. Downstream of this foundational emergence, the universe undergoes elaboration through covolution — the active construction and refinement of possibility-spaces through the emergence of structure.
This is speculative at the cosmological level and more grounded at biological scales. The framework's strongest position is in its account of how covolution operates in living systems and human societies. Its weakest position is in claiming that these principles extend all the way down to cosmic origins.
The honest assessment is that ZSH addresses a real philosophical problem (what makes the entropy domain applicable?), and covolution addresses a real biological phenomenon (how organisms actively construct their possibility-spaces). Whether the two can be integrated into a seamless account of universal birth remains to be seen. The framework makes a good-faith effort, but it is an effort, not an established result.
