A rock in a river

1) changes and is changed (1, reciprocal causation),

2) it retains structure as an erosion pattern (2, retention),

3) it alters the channel so subsequent flow states differ (3, possibility-space modification).

4) it transmit information: the retained modification must bias future variation or selection through transmitted information

(genetic, developmental, cultural, learned), not merely leave a physical trace.

That is the line between covolution and ordinary physical coupling.
